Having said that, the $54,000 Self-Contained Hootenanny is not just a jukebox of sorts, as this autonomous mechanical band will rely on 17 instruments that have been built into its cabinet so that it can generate a verifiable shin-dig. Arriving in a handcrafted oak cabinet, the Self-Contained Hootenanny’s instruments are played by a system of precisely calibrated pneumatics which are capable of strumming and plucking strings while thumping and tapping drums. Apart from that, it holds up to 13,000 MIDI, MP3, and Karaoke songs which can be selected through a 15″ touchscreen interface, so that the operator is able to select from 10 different music categories, where among them include big band, rock, blues, jazz, bluegrass, and children’s songs, among others. This means there is a little bit of something for everybody. As for the rhythm section, it will rely on a bass and snare drum, which is further augmented by a dozen auxiliary percussion instruments, including bongos, agogos, woodblocks, tambourine, maracas, cowbell, and a ride, crash, and splash cymbal. A bass synthesizer will support the entire “ensemble” which adds in plenty of bottom for each tune, while a full-size guitar and banjo provide the melody and harmony for classics such as A Hard Day’s Night and 99 Red Balloons.
